Healthy Chocolate Banana Smoothie

Healthy and chocolate in the same title????  YES!  This healthy smoothie is one of my all-time favorites.  It’s super simple to make and comes out thick and creamy.  This is one of the healthy chocolate smoothies kids will love and is gluten free and dairy free.  It’s great to take with you on the go for a healthy snack or a little energy boost!

The main ingredients in this smoothie are banana and avocado – two powerful fruits.  Bananas are high in potassium, can improve your mood, and act as a prebiotic.  (Here’s 22 other things bananas are good for  🙂 )   Avocados contain 20 vitamins and minerals, are low in sugar, and contain a bunch of fat.  Luckily, it’s the good kind of fat that keeps you full for longer!

1 cup of almond milk  (*see note*)

1 banana (preferably frozen, but can be fresh)

½ avocado (can be fresh or frozen)

2 tbsp of raw cacao powder

1 serving Chocolate protein powder


Nutritional Value:

(all are approximate due to the many different protein powders and milks that you can make this with)

Fat: 10 grams

Carbs: 54 grams

Protein: 41 grams

Total Calories: 448 calories

Pour your milk into the blender first to avoid the ingredients sticking to the bottom of the blender.  Next, add the banana, avocado, cacao powder and protein powder.  If you have a Blendtec blender, press the “Smoothie” setting and it will be ready in 50 seconds.  (I really love my Blendtec!)  Lastly, pour your smoothie into a fun cup and enjoy it as soon as possible to conserve as many nutrients as possible.

The Blendtec is a really high-powered blender that can handle frozen fruits and vegetables and never leaves chunks.  If you don’t have a high-powered blender, try to let your fruit warm up and soften for 5-10 minutes before you try to blend it.  You could also add ¼ – ½ cup more milk or stop the blender and stir all the ingredients around to ensure equal blending.

This recipe will yield about 14 oz. of finished smoothie product!


~You can double this recipe to use as a meal replacement.
~If you are out of raw cacao powder or find that it makes you a little too jumpy, then feel free to omit that. The chocolate protein powder should be enough flavor.
~Add hemp hearts or chia seeds. Both hemp hearts and chia seeds are high in dietary fiber and magnesium.
~Add some berries – I recommend blueberries, but experiment and see what you love!
~Double this batch and make popsicles for the summer!

Note: You can choose any kind of milk for this recipe that you have on hand.  We don’t use cow’s milk at our house, so this recipe was made with vanilla almond milk.  We also use soy milk and coconut milk.  These taste delicious in this recipe too!

I recommend Orgain protein powder and I buy it because it’s gluten free and dairy free.  The protein comes from plants – peas, brown rice and chia seeds.
